Apple CarPlay Opens to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude: Siri Loses Monopoly
Apple is opening CarPlay to third-party AI chatbots for the first time with iOS 26.4. The update will allow drivers to use ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic Claude directly through their vehicle's infotainment system, marking a major shift from Siri's exclusive grip on in-car voice assistants.

Apple CarPlay Opens to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude: Siri Loses Monopoly
Apple is making a dramatic shift in its automotive strategy. For the first time, the company is opening its CarPlay platform to third-party AI chatbots, allowing drivers to use ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic Claude directly through their vehicle's infotainment system.
Breaking Siri's Grip
The change comes with iOS 26.4, which is currently in beta. Until now, Apple maintained strict control over voice assistants in CarPlay, limiting third-party apps to a small, carefully curated list. The company cited driver safety as the reason for limiting which apps could access the in-vehicle system.
However, a new developer guide reveals that Apple will soon support voice-based conversational apps. The first AI assistants to gain access will be OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude.
"This is a fundamental shift in Apple's approach to in-car voice assistance," said one analyst. "For years, Siri has been the only game in town for CarPlay users. Now, Apple is essentially admitting that consumers want more choices."
How It Will Work
The integration will allow drivers to ask questions and get responses from AI assistants directly through their car's display. However, there are important limitations:
- •No vehicle control: The AI assistants won't be able to give commands to the car itself or the iPhone
- •Manual activation: Users must manually open the app to access the chatbot—voice activation is not supported for safety reasons
- •Specialized interface: AI companies will need to create voice control screens optimized for in-vehicle use
A Major Win for AI Companies
This represents a significant victory for OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. CarPlay is available in hundreds of car models worldwide, giving these AI companies access to millions of potential users in a context—driving—where voice-based AI assistants are particularly useful.
The timing is notable. Apple has been working on its own AI improvements under the umbrella of "Apple Intelligence," but the company has faced criticism for Siri's perceived lag behind competitors like ChatGPT. By opening CarPlay to third-party AI, Apple is effectively letting users decide which assistant they prefer rather than forcing them to rely on Siri.
What This Means for Drivers
For drivers, the change offers more flexibility than ever before. Someone who prefers ChatGPT's conversational abilities can use it for general questions, while someone who trusts Gemini's integration with Google Maps can switch between assistants based on their needs.
The feature is currently in beta and will be released more widely with iOS 26.4 this spring. Car manufacturers will need to support the new capabilities in their infotainment systems.
