What Is MCP?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard developed by Anthropic that lets AI models connect to external tools, data sources, and services in a standardized way. Think of it as USB for AI agents — instead of every device needing a unique cable, MCP provides one protocol that works across all compatible tools.
Before MCP, connecting an AI agent to your tools required custom integration work for each tool. An AI agent built for Slack couldn't easily talk to GitHub or your database. MCP solves this by defining a standard way for AI models to discover available tools, call them with structured requests, and receive interpreted results.
Why MCP Matters for AI Agents
The promise of AI agents is that they can take actions in the real world — book meetings, write code, query databases, send messages. But without a standard way to connect, developers had to build custom integrations for each tool.
MCP changes this. Once an AI model or agent supports MCP, it can connect to any MCP-compatible tool out of the box. This creates an ecosystem effect: the more tools that implement MCP, the more capable every MCP-compatible agent becomes, without any additional integration work.
Which Companies Support MCP
MCP was pioneered by Anthropic and has been rapidly adopted:
AI Companies: Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI, Google (Gemini), and Poolside have native MCP support.
Developer Tools: GitHub, Slack, PostgreSQL, and Filesystem all have MCP servers available.
AI Infrastructure: Cloudflare Workers AI, AWS Bedrock, and Neon serverless Postgres offer MCP integrations.
How MCP Works
MCP follows a client-server architecture:
1. MCP Host — The AI application (Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.)
2. MCP Client — Lives inside the host, manages connections to servers
3. MCP Server — A lightweight service that exposes a tool or data source via the MCP standard
The agent doesn't need to know HOW to talk to GitHub. It sends a standardized MCP request, the MCP server translates that into GitHub API calls, and returns structured results.
Real-World Use Cases
Database Queries: Connect Claude directly to PostgreSQL or Neon. Ask questions in plain English, get SQL results back.
Codebase Operations: MCP servers for GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket let agents review PRs, file issues, and manage repos without custom API wrappers.
Internal Tools: Build MCP servers for your company's internal APIs. Once connected, any MCP-compatible agent can work with your internal tools.
